Who we are

RypeIQ is a food quality intelligence app for iOS built and operated by Michael Mobley ("we," "us," or "our"). You can reach us at hello@rypeiq.com.

What we collect and why

Account information

When you create an account, we collect your email address and a password (stored securely via Firebase Auth). We use this to identify your account and sync your data across devices.

Pantry and food data

The core of RypeIQ is your pantry: items you scan, add manually, or import. This includes item names, quantities, expiry dates, categories, quality scores, and usage history. This data is stored in Firebase Firestore and tied to your account. It is used to calculate your household scores, generate recipes, and power the app's features. It is not shared with third parties.

Barcode and camera data

When you use Store Mode or Pantry Scan, the app accesses your device camera to scan barcodes. Barcodes are sent to the Open Food Facts API to retrieve product data. Camera images are processed on-device and are not stored or transmitted to our servers. When you use the label scanning feature, a photo of a product label is sent to the Anthropic API for text recognition. That image is not stored by us after processing.

Recipe generation

When you generate recipes, a list of your pantry items (names, quantities, and expiry status) is sent to the Anthropic API to generate recipe suggestions. No personally identifying information is included in these requests. Anthropic's data handling is governed by their privacy policy.

Household data

If you invite household members, their email addresses and membership status are stored in Firestore. Household members can view and interact with shared pantry data. You control who is in your household.

Subscription data

Subscriptions are managed through RevenueCat and processed by Apple. We do not store or have access to your payment information. RevenueCat stores your subscription status and links it to your Apple ID. Their data handling is governed by RevenueCat's privacy policy.

Usage data

We may collect basic, anonymized usage information (such as app crashes or feature usage patterns) to improve the app. This does not include your food data or personal information.

What we do not collect

• We do not collect precise location data
• We do not collect health or medical data
• We do not run advertising or share data with advertisers
• We do not sell your data to anyone
• We do not use your food data to train AI models

Third-party services we use

• Firebase (Google) — authentication and database storage
• Open Food Facts — product data lookup by barcode (open database, no account required)
• USDA FoodData Central — nutritional reference data
• Anthropic — AI recipe generation and label scanning
• RevenueCat — subscription management
• Apple — payment processing and app distribution

Data retention

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your pantry data, household data, and account information will be deleted from our systems within 30 days. Some anonymized, aggregated data may be retained for product improvement purposes.

Your rights

You can request a copy of your data, ask us to correct inaccurate information, or request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by emailing hello@rypeiq.com.

If you are in the European Economic Area, you have additional rights under GDPR including the right to data portability and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

Children

RypeIQ is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. We will notify users of significant changes through the app or by email. The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent update.
